Inauguration: Arlington County says to treat it as a “snow day”

Arlington County now has an info page devoted to inaugural preparation and related updates. The general advice given by the county is to treat Inauguration Day as a snow day, be prepared with adequate provisions, and avoid driving. One important bit of info: Arlington will be enforcing weekday traffic regulations on January 20.

Inauguration: Some concrete transportation plans emerge

This is a pretty extensive look at transportation issues related to the January 20 presidential inauguration, with officials starting to go on the record with concrete plans for roads, Metro, and charter buses. 

For example, Virginia is planning to close some of the major Potomac crossings to all but official vehicles and buses. An interesting question is whether this restricted access will be extended further from the District. To inside the Beltway, for example.

Maryland and the District are also considering dedicated bus lanes and pedestrian-only streets.

Charter buses will need a permit.

People arriving at the ceremony by Metro can expect to wait for hours to get on trains leaving the Mall.

Folks living or staying within an hour’s walk of the Mall might be better off walking.

Rent out the condo for Inaugural weekend?

This Washington Post story today is a nice, concise guide to the issues people need to think through in considering whether to rent out their homes for the Inaugural weekend, along with some resources. Rule #1: get all the money in advance. 

I suspect that the more outrageous prices that are being bandied about are probably not attainable, or would draw so many people renting out their places into the market that it would drive prices down. I just looked on Craigslist, and prices are all over the place.
