Rick Martin, in the CNet Asia Tokyo Shift blog, reports that construction is underway on a 60 foot tall Tetsujin figure that will be put up in Kobe in August. This is the official site for the project.
Here’s a video of the fabrication:
Of course, when Tetsujin was shown in America in the mid 60s, he was known as Gigantor, which I enjoyed when I was 3 years old. YouTube has the classic calypso opening theme:
Update: I had missed Tokyo5’s post on Tetsujin, which explains more about the character in the Japanese context.

Thanks for the link.
That YouTube clip was fun.
I never watched “Gigantor” in America…had never heard of it.
I first saw that character in Japan…so I only knew it by the name 「鉄人28号」.

You’re not old enough, I think. It only ran for a couple years in the early/mid 60s. Before Speed Racer.
There was another Japanese imported cartoon that I liked at the time called “8th Man” in the U.S. and “8-Man” in Japan, I believe.

Well, I was born in 1969.
I don’t know “8-man” either.
I do know “Speed Racer” (「マッハゴゴゴ」) though!
