In the 500th game played at Michigan Stadium, the Wolverines overcame a 19-0 3rd quarter deficit to go 2-2 and 1-0 in the Big Ten. The offense turned things around in the second half, hitting some passes down the field, which opened up the run. After 5 first half half turnovers, the offense and return teams took care of the ball the rest of the way. The defensive line was incredible, getting stronger as the game went on. As Mitch Albom writes, this win jump-starts the Rich Rodriguez era.
The Wizards held their annual media day yesterday (9/26) and start training camp today. Some nice pictures here. New faces include PG Dee Brown and first round draft pick C JaVale McGee. New-again is former Wizard and University of Maryland star SG Juan Dixon.
Geoff Livingston comments on part one of Technorati’s State of the Blogosphere 2008, which is being released in parts during this week. Part One deals with the demographics of bloggers, based on Technorati’s survey.
This is a useful resource. One interesting stat: Asian bloggers skew much younger (73% under 35) than American (42% under 35) and European (48% under 35) bloggers.
Frozen River is a dark drama about two poor women, one white, one Mohawk, who get caught up in smuggling illegal aliens into New York from Quebec across the frozen St. Lawrence river. It’s pretty good. Well-acted (one of the leads was Melissa Leo, who was in the outstanding crime series Homicide). A couple of the plot twists were barely plausible and the ending was softened up.
I had never heard of Tim Maia, and discovered him back in the spring surfing around and listening to samples on iTunes. Soul of Brazil is a compilation of songs done mostly in the 70s, that fuse American soul with Brazilian styles. It’s an outstanding CD. Tim Maia passed away in 1998.
I was able to get up to the Jersey Shore a couple times this summer, and have a couple recommendations.
On Broadway in Point Pleasant Beach, the Shore Point Motel is a nice place to stay. A basic motel that’s clean, family run, easy to deal with, walkable to the beach, has a nice pool, and small refrigerators in the rooms.
Also in Point Pleasant Beach, Red’s Lobster Pot has a few full service tables inside, but most people order at the counter and sit at picnic tables on the large, covered deck. While most opt for steamed lobster with drawn butter and corn, the lobster quesadilla is also great.
Freedman’s Bakery, at 803 Main Street in Belmar, has great baked goods, some of the best coffee I can remember, and wonderful breakfast choices. Pick up a pork roll, egg and cheese on a hard roll and take it to the beach.
Ocean Grove is a great place to walk around, see Victorian architecture, and go to the beach.
Here’s an old Seaside Heights promotional video that was posted on YouTube:
Cedar Point is an amusement park in Northern Ohio, about halfway between Detroit and Cleveland, known for its many (16) roller coasters. I went there a few years back, and rode the Millennium Force.
